Katherine
Landing Water Treatment Plant
The National Park Service (NPS) initiated a project to replace four aging water
treatment facilities within Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The largest
of these facilities is Katherine Landing located in Arizona on the southern
end of the recreation area on Lake Mohave. Due to increasing visitation and
a failing direct filtration plant, a new facility was needed.
Richard P. Arber Associates was
selected by the NPS to perform
the design of the new Katherine
Landing Membrane Water Treatment
Facility. Katherine Landing is
one of the first facilities in
the U.S to use a dual membrane
system of microfiltration and nanofiltration
to produce purified drinking water.
The system achieves high passage
of desired minerals with high rejection
of organic compounds. This innovative
design removes total organic carbon
but allows desired minerals and
alkalinity to pass through to maintain
corrosion control and taste. To
protect the aquifer and fully utilize
this natural water resource, the
membrane reject streams are blended
with the raw water and used in
a subsurface bubbler system. The
system uses raw water in combination
with the reject stream to irrigate
native plants at the campground
areas. |
